A: They are mechanically similar pusher seals. The Type 9 typically uses a PTFE wedge for chemical resistance, while the Type 8-1 uses an O-ring. We supply replacements for both.

Do I need cooling water for this seal?

Generally, no. This seal is designed to run hot. However, we recommend a steam quench (Plan 62) on the atmospheric side to prevent oxidation (coking) of any small leakage, which could clog the seal.
