This single external (front-loading) mechanical seal is a precision-engineered, direct OEM-compatible replacement designed for Alfa Laval® LKH series and SolidC™ series sanitary centrifugal pumps equipped with a single external seal chamber. It follows the AESSEAL® P07U / Vulcan® Type 92 pattern, featuring a resin-impregnated carbon graphite rotating face paired with a high-purity (99.5%) alumina oxide ceramic stationary seat, sealed by an FDA-compliant EPDM O-ring secondary seal.
The externally mounted coil spring design enables quick in-situ replacement without disassembling the pump motor or drive train — critical for vertical pump installations and space-constrained skids. With lapped optical-flat sealing surfaces (Ra < 0.1 μm) and a left-hand thread stationary seat locking mechanism (tightens counter-clockwise to prevent loosening during forward pump rotation), this seal delivers reliable, hygienic sealing for dairy, beverage, pharmaceutical, and CIP/SIP processes operating at pressures up to 10 bar and temperatures up to 120°C (EPDM) or 180°C (FKM optional).
Available in standard shaft diameters including 31.7 mm (1-1/4″), with 25 mm and 42 mm options on request.
Key Features
• Vertical Pump Specialist: Engineered for Alfa Laval (LKH series or similar) vertical or multi-stage pumps handling sanitary fluids.
• FDA Compliance: All wetted parts including the Alumina Ceramic and EPDM are FDA compliant for food and beverage contact.
• Sterile Design: The ceramic face is polished to a mirror finish (<0.1 Ra) to prevent bacterial adhesion and ensure cleanability.
• Face Flatness Stability: Vertical pumps can have shaft runout; our Alumina Ceramic seats are lapped to extreme flatness to maintain a seal even with minor shaft wobble.
• Thermal Conductivity: High-purity alumina dissipates heat generated by dry-running incidents (common in tank emptying) better than lower grade ceramics.
Applications & Compatible Equipment
Compatible Pumps:
Alfa Laval® LKH Series (LKH-5 through LKH-90) — single external seal chamber configuration only (NOT for double flushed seal chamber).
Alfa Laval® SolidC™ Series — same P07U single seal footprint.
Cross-reference: AESSEAL® P07U / P07, Vulcan® Type 92, John Crane® Type 2800E.
Typical Media:
Milk, cream, whey, yogurt, fruit juice concentrates, beer wort, soft drinks, CIP cleaning solutions (NaOH 1–3% / HNO₃ 0.5–1.5% at ≤85°C), pharmaceutical WFI/purified water, edible oils, sugar syrups — clean, low-viscosity, non-abrasive liquids.
Industries:
Dairy & milk processing, brewing & beverage, pharmaceutical & biotech (non-sterile), food ingredients, edible oil refining.
Seal Face & Elastomer Options
| Component | Standard Material | Optional Upgrade |
| Rotating Face (Spring-Loaded) | Resin-Impregnated Carbon Graphite | Silicon Carbide (SiC) |
| Stationary Seat (Threaded) | 99.5% Alumina Oxide Ceramic | Silicon Carbide (SiC) / Tungsten Carbide (TC) |
| Secondary Seal (O-ring) | EPDM (FDA 21 CFR 177.2600, -30°C to +120°C) | NBR (oil/water, ≤100°C), FKM/Viton® (≤180°C, limited steam resistance) |
| Metal Components | SS304 | SS316 / SS316L (full hygienic grade) |
Material Guidance:
99.5% Al₂O₃ Ceramic vs SiC: Alumina is the cost-effective standard for clean food/beverage service — excellent chemical resistance to CIP chemicals and thermal shock stability. Upgrade to SiC/SiC if trace abrasive particles are present, or for extended continuous duty cycles requiring maximum wear life.
Carbon Graphite Rotating Face: Self-lubricating property allows safe start-up with marginal liquid film. However, carbon will wear rapidly if pump runs dry for more than a few seconds — always prime the pump before starting.
EPDM vs FKM: EPDM is the default for food CIP/SIP (hot water, caustic, nitric acid, ozone). FKM (Viton®) handles higher continuous temperatures and some aggressive chemicals, but has limited resistance to live steam and hot caustic solutions. Consult us for specific fluid compatibility.

Case Study
Dairy Pasteurizer: A vertical booster pump in a milk pasteurization line needed a seal replacement. We provided this FDA Alumina/Carbon seal. It handled the thermal shock of hot milk and cold cleaning cycles without cracking.
Testimonials
We use these in our Alfa Laval LKH pumps. They clean up perfectly during CIP and the ceramic doesn't pit from the acid wash.

FAQs
Q: Does this fit Alfa Laval LKH pumps?
A: Yes, we have specific models designed to replace the single and double seals found in the LKH pump range. Please verify your shaft size and seal kit part number.
Q: Is EPDM suitable for CIP with nitric acid and SIP at 130°C?
A: Yes — quality EPDM is standard for food plant CIP (NaOH 1–3%, HNO₃ 0.5–1.5% at ≤85°C) and short-term SIP up to 140°C. For frequent >140°C SIP cycles, discuss FKM or special compound options with our technical team.
Q: Can I upgrade to SiC/SiC faces for longer life?
A: Absolutely. SiC rotating face + SiC stationary seat is available as an upgrade for abrasive-trace fluids or extended continuous duty. Contact us with your process details for a recommendation.
