When specifying a mechanical seal for a centrifugal pump, reactor agitator, or hot oil circulation system in chemical duty, the single most consequential decision is not the primary face material — it is the secondary sealing concept. In high-temperature chemical service, the elastomer O-ring is usually the first component to fail. It swells in aromatic solvents, hardens in hot caustic, permeates under chlorine, and cracks above its glass-transition point. That is why the classic debate of metal bellows vs O-ring (pusher) mechanical seals sits at the center of every seal review for chemical plants, refineries, and API 610 pump packages.
This article breaks down the two concepts by temperature ceiling, chemical compatibility, pressure limit, shaft-size coverage, and brand-interchange reality — then shows how NINGBO MIAOYU MACHINERY TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD. builds both families as OEM/ODM replacements for John Crane, Burgmann, AESSEAL, Flowserve and Grundfos assemblies.
An O-ring mechanical seal (pusher type) uses a dynamic elastomer O-ring that slides axially on the shaft or sleeve as the seal faces wear. Multiple springs or a single conical spring provide face load. The O-ring is cheap, forgiving, and available in NBR, FKM (Viton®), EPDM, and FFKM (Kalrez®/Chemraz®).
A metal bellows mechanical seal (non-pusher type) removes the sliding elastomer entirely. An edge-welded bellow — usually in 316SS, Inconel 625, or Hastelloy C-276 — acts simultaneously as the spring, the torque transmitter, and the static secondary seal. There is no O-ring in motion, no shaft fretting, and no elastomer to degrade.
Rule of thumb from field data:
Below 150 °C (302 °F): Standard FKM or EPDM O-ring pusher seals are fine for water, light solvents, and mild chemicals.
150–200 °C: FKM degrades; FFKM pushes to ~250 °C but at 10× the cost and with extrusion risk.
200–300 °C: Elastomers are out. Metal bellows is the default — Hastelloy C-276 bellows handle hot oil, asphalt, and amine service to 425 °C.
Above 300 °C: Even metal bellows needs jacket cooling / API Plan 62 quench; welded Inconel bellows remain the only single-seal option.
O-ring pusher seals live or die by elastomer choice:
NBR — water, mild alkali, ≤100 °C. Dies in aromatics.
FKM/Viton® — good for acids, oils, ≤200 °C. Attacked by amines, hot HF, and some ketones.
EPDM — steam, caustic, glycols. Destroyed by hydrocarbons.
FFKM — broadest elastomer resistance, ~1800 chemicals, but priced like gold and pressure-sensitive.
Metal bellows seals eliminate the elastomer from the wetted path. For chlorine, 98% sulfuric acid above 120 °C, hot nitric acid, or halogenated solvents, there is no O-ring to kill the seal. Static grafoil or PTFE secondary rings replace the dynamic O-ring. This is why plants running concentrated H₂SO₄, NaOH evaporation, or chlorination specify bellows seals exclusively.
Because the bellow wall is thin, metal bellows seals cap lower in pressure than pusher seals — typically to ~10–16 bar for standard rotating bellows, up to 25 bar for stationary balanced bellows. O-ring pusher seals (e.g. John Crane 58U class) reach 12–18 bar easily and tolerate higher cyclic pressure.
Shaft speed is comparable: both run ≤25 m/s. Bellows seals actually reduce vibration-induced face chatter on high-speed boiler feed pumps because there is no sliding sleeve.

Both concepts cover the same shaft diameters, so retrofit is rarely a dimension problem.

One PO, two technologies — quote a 58U O-ring seal and a 606 bellows upgrade side by side.
Face material freedom — SiC vs SiC, TC vs Carbon, Al₂O₃ ceramic, all with Hastelloy C-276 bellows or FKM/FFKM O-rings.
Dimensional interchange — 14/16/18/20/22/25/28/30/32/35/40/45/50/55/60/65/70/80/90/100 mm standard series, DIN 24960 envelopes.
OEM/ODM — laser-etched model plates, private-label cartridges, custom bellows ply counts for vibration duty.
If your fluid is below 150 °C, non-oxidizing, and the O-ring is compatible — an O-ring pusher seal (John Crane 58U, Burgmann MG1, AES M03S, Miaoyu MY-58U) is the economical answer.
If the duty is above 200 °C, or any hot concentrated acid/alkali/halogen — the O-ring will be the failure, not the faces. Specify a welded metal bellows seal (John Crane 606, Burgmann H7N, Flowserve BXR, Miaoyu MY-606 / MY-609) and remove the elastomer from the equation.
For plants running mixed duty — some loops hot, some cold — stock both, and standardize the shaft sizes (35 mm, 45 mm, 55 mm, 70 mm are the most common in chemical pump pools) so one spare cartridge body serves either insert.
